The Puerto Rican Parrot: A Symbol of Resilience and Natural Wonder
There are few creatures on earth as rare, as beautiful, or as deeply symbolic as the Puerto Rican parrot — Amazona vittata. Bright green with a red forehead and blue wing tips, it is one of the most endangered birds in the world. And it is found nowhere else on earth.
A Bird on the Brink
At its lowest point, in 1975, the wild Puerto Rican parrot population had collapsed to just 13 birds. A species that once numbered in the hundreds of thousands had been pushed to the edge of extinction by habitat destruction, hunting, hurricanes, and the introduction of predators like rats and mongooses.
It was one of the most dire conservation situations in American history. And yet — the parrot survived.
The Road Back
Thanks to decades of intensive conservation work, captive breeding programs, nest monitoring, predator control, and habitat restoration have slowly brought the population back from the brink. Today, there are several hundred Puerto Rican parrots in the wild. The work continues — Hurricane Maria in 2017 dealt a devastating blow to the wild population — but the parrot endures. Like Puerto Rico itself, it refuses to disappear.

The Puerto Rican parrot is more than a conservation story. It is a symbol of the island's natural heritage and the resilience of its people.
