About Adjuntas
Founded on 11 August 1815 by Diego Maldonado, 18,020 people at the 2020 census, and the only town on this list with no coastline at all. Adjuntas sits at 2,316 feet in the Cordillera Central, and the average temperature is around 70°F — which on this island is cold enough to be the whole personality.
Hence La Suiza de Puerto Rico, the Switzerland of Puerto Rico. It answers to two other names as well: La Ciudad del Gigante Dormido, for the sleeping giant the mountain ridge makes against the sky, and La Tierra de Lagos.
It is the island's main coffee producer and has been for a long time — in the nineteenth century Adjuntas coffee went to Europe and to the Vatican. Theodore Roosevelt came through in 1906. Monte Guilarte rises to 3,773 feet, sixth-highest on the island. Las Cabañas bridge has stood since 1919. And Casa Pueblo, the community organisation that fought the mines and now runs on its own solar power, is the reason a lot of people outside the mountains know the name.

More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
