About Arecibo
Established 1 May 1616, on land first settled in 1556, which makes Arecibo the third Spanish settlement on the island after Caparra and San Germán. 87,754 people at the 2020 census.
On 5 August 1702 Captain Antonio de los Reyes Correa drove off an attack by two Royal Navy warships, killing 22 of the invaders. The town has been La Villa del Capitán Correa ever since. It is also Ciudad del Cetí, for the tiny fish that run up the river, Diamante del Norte, and Muy Leal — the very loyal.
Then there is the telescope. The Arecibo Observatory broadcast the Arecibo message into deep space in 1974 and stood over the karst sinkhole until it collapsed on 1 December 2020. The town also holds the 1898 lighthouse and the 295-foot "Birth of the New World" statue, the tallest in the Americas.
