About Bayamón
Founded on 22 May 1772 by Don Juan Ramírez de Arellano, and now the second most populous municipality on the island — 185,187 people at the 2020 census.
It collects nicknames the way few towns do, and they are all affectionate insults. Ciudad del Chicharrón, pork rind city, for the stands along the highway. Ciudad de Vaqueros, cowboy city. Ciudad de las Ciencias, for the Parque de las Ciencias. And Ciudad del Tapón — traffic jam city — which anyone who has driven the 22 at six o'clock will accept without argument.
The history runs deeper than the jokes. The first hydraulic sugar mill in Puerto Rico was built here in 1549. The Marcos Xiorro slave rebellion was planned here in 1821. Ron del Barrilito, the oldest rum distillery on the island, still operates in Bayamón. The Casa Alcaldía is built straight across a divided highway, which is the most Bayamón thing imaginable. The Francisco Oller museum carries the name of the painter. The Festival de la Santa Cruz runs in May.

More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
