About Cabo Rojo
Founded in 1771 by Don Nicolás Ramírez de Arellano y Martínez de Matos. 47,158 people at the 2020 census.
The salt flats here are called the oldest industry in the New World, and they are one of the few places on earth where microbial mats form. Above them the Los Morrillos lighthouse has stood since 1881, two hundred feet over the water.
Two names define the town. Ramón Emeterio Betances, the abolitionist and revolutionary — Cuna de Betances. And Roberto Cofresí, the pirate — Cuna de Cofresí, with a cave on the coast named for him. It is also Los Mata con Hacha, which needs no translating, and Capital del Turismo.
Emiliano Mercado del Toro, once the oldest living man in the world, was from Cabo Rojo too.
