About Carolina
Carolina became a municipality on 31 January 1857 under Santiago Veve y Vidal, though people had been settling the land since the late seventeenth century. It was called Trujillo Bajo first. 154,815 people at the 2020 census.
It is Tierra de Gigantes, land of giants, and the name works three ways. Literally, for Felipe Birriel González, who stood seven feet eleven. Figuratively, for Roberto Clemente and for Julia de Burgos, both from here — the greatest right fielder who ever played the game, and one of the great poets in the Spanish language. And for Jesús T. Piñero, the first Puerto Rican appointed governor of the island.
The other nickname, El Pueblo de los Tumba Brazos, comes from a story Carolina people tell better than anyone else can.
Today the municipality holds Luis Muñoz Marín airport and the Isla Verde strip, which means most people who visit the island touch Carolina before anywhere else. The Roberto Clemente stadium and the Ciudad Deportiva carry his name. Fiestas Patronales de San Fernando run from late May into June. Thirteen barrios.
When your pueblo is somewhere you left
More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
