About Cataño
Established as a municipality on 1 July 1927 and named for Hernando de Cataño, a physician who came to the island in the 1560s. 23,155 people at the 2020 census on the least land of any municipality in Puerto Rico.
It is La Antesala de la Capital, the foyer of the capital, because the ferry has crossed to Old San Juan since 1853 and la lancha de Cataño is still how a lot of people get to work. It is also El Pueblo Que Se Negó a Morir — the town that refused to die — which is the kind of name a place earns rather than chooses.
The Bacardi distillery is here, the one people call the cathedral of rum. So is the India Taína monument. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora del Carmen run in July.
Hurricane María destroyed an estimated 650 homes in Cataño on 20 September 2017.
