About Cayey
Founded 17 August 1773 by Juan Mata Vázquez, in the Sierra de Cayey. 41,652 people at the 2020 census.
The mountains hold the cloud, which is why it is Ciudad de las Brumas. It is also Ciudad del Torito, after the Toritos who play at the Pedro Montañez stadium, and Ciudad del Coquí Dorado — the golden coquí being endemic to these hills and nowhere else.
Carite Forest and Carite Lake sit above the town. The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church anchors the plaza and its festival runs in August. A University of Puerto Rico campus and a large Coca-Cola bottling plant keep people working, though these days a lot of Cayey commutes down to San Juan.
Hurricane María destroyed 3,000 homes here in September 2017.
