About Dorado
Dorado was a barrio of Toa Baja until 13 May 1842, when Jacinto López Martínez founded it as a municipality in its own right. It lost that status again briefly between 1902 and 1905, then got it back for good. 35,879 people at the 2020 census.
It is fifteen miles west of San Juan on the Atlantic, and the land is almost entirely flat — about 95% flood plain, with karst limestone coming up in the southern barrios. Six barrios in total: Espinosa, Higuillar, Maguayo, Mameyal and Río Lajas, with the barrio-pueblo.
The nicknames are all about presentation: La Ciudad Ejemplar, Ciudad Dorada, and La Más Limpia de Puerto Rico — the cleanest town in Puerto Rico, which is the sort of claim a town only makes if it intends to keep it.
Sugar built it, then golf and pharmaceuticals. The second G7 summit was held here in 1976. Casa del Rey is the town museum, Ojo del Buey the park everyone grew up going to, and the Sanctuary of Christ of the Reconciliation holds what is said to be the third largest statue of Christ in the Caribbean. Fiestas Patronales de San Antonio de Padua on 13 June.
