About Guaynabo
In 1508 Juan Ponce de León founded Caparra, the first European settlement in Puerto Rico, on ground that is now Guaynabo. The archaeological site is still there. The town calls itself Primer Poblado de Puerto Rico and Ciudad de los Conquistadores, and on the first count it is simply right.
The municipality itself was founded 9 April 1769 by Pedro R. Dávila. 89,780 people at the 2020 census — down 8.3% from its peak of 100,053 in 2000.
Today it is a business and media centre west of San Juan; WAPA-TV is headquartered here. The Mabó Carnival runs in February, the Fiestas Patronales de San Pedro Mártir in April. The Guaynabo Mets took national basketball championships in 1980, 1982 and 1989.
