About Gurabo
Founded 27 November 1815 by Luis del Carmen Echevarría, in the Caguas valley. 40,622 people at the 2020 census.
The town centre climbs a hillside called El Cerro, and the way up is a staircase — the Escaleras de Gurabo, painted in colour, rising roughly twenty-two storeys. That is where the name La Ciudad de las Escaleras comes from, and it is the single most photographed thing in the municipality.
It is also Puerta del Turismo del Sureste. Dairy farming works the land; the factories make metals, paper, plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles and electrical equipment. Lago Carraízo sits on its edge. The San José church dates from 1822 and its festival runs in March; the first Baptist church opened in 1903.
Hurricane María set off landslides across the municipality and destroyed 489 homes.
