About Hormigueros
A village stood here from 1692; the municipality was founded 1 April 1874. 15,654 people at the 2020 census. The name means anthills, though it may come instead from the Taíno Horomico, river of gold, for the mining done here.
The story that built the town: the founder's daughter disappeared for fifteen days, and her return was credited to the Virgin of Montserrat. The Basílica Menor de la Virgen de Monserrate went up on the hill above, and Hormigueros became the island's chief Marian pilgrimage site — El Pueblo del Milagro, and Los Peregrinos, the pilgrims.
It is also Corazón del Oeste, the heart of the west. Central Eureka refined its sugar. The Fiestas Patronales Virgen de la Monserrate and the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Marathon both fall in September.
