About Isabela
Isabela was established in 1819 and named for Isabella I of Castile. Before that it was San Antonio de la Tuna, a hermitage settlement further inland; the ruins are still there. 42,943 people at the 2020 census.
Three nicknames, and they do not agree with each other either. El Jardín del Noroeste, the garden of the northwest, for the wildflowers. El Pueblo de los Quesitos de Hoja, for the fresh white cheese wrapped in a banana leaf that you buy at the roadside and eat in the car. And La Ciudad de los Gallitos.
The town also breeds Paso Fino horses, and the coast does the rest of the talking: Jobos, Montones, the karst cliffs, the Guajataca tunnel cut through the rock, La Cara del Indio watching the road. Guajataca State Forest inland. Fiestas Patronales de San Antonio de Padua in June.
Fourteen barrios: Arenales Altos, Arenales Bajos, Bajura, Bejucos, Coto, Galateo Alto, Galateo Bajo, Guayabos, Guerrero, Jobos, Llanadas, Mora and Planas, with the barrio-pueblo at the centre.
