About Loíza
Declared an urban area in 1692 and an official town in 1719, on the northeast coast east of Carolina. 23,693 people at the 2020 census, and the highest concentration of Afro-Puerto Ricans anywhere on the island.
It is named for a woman — the cacica Loaíza, or Yuíza, who ruled the region then called Haimanio on the river that still carries her name. El Pueblo de la Cacica. Also La Capital de la Tradición.
The Festival of Santiago Apóstol every July is the reason people come: the máscaras de vejigante, carved from coconut, are made here and worn here, and the tradition is unbroken. Loíza is also claimed as a birthplace of plena, an honour it shares with Ponce.
Piñones — the mangroves, the pines, the kiosks along the beach road — is in this municipality. Hurricane María took the roofs off 598 homes and destroyed 298 outright.
