About Ponce
Founded on 12 August 1692, 137,491 people at the 2020 census, and the largest city on the island outside the San Juan metro. Ponce has never been shy about what it is: La Perla del Sur, Ciudad Señorial, Ciudad de las Quenepas, Ciudad de los Leones.
It has its own architecture — Ponce Creole, Art Nouveau crossed with neoclassical, which exists nowhere else. It has nine museums, including the Museo de Arte de Ponce. Plaza Las Delicias with the lions, the Parque de Bombas in red and black stripes, Castillo Serrallés and the Cruceta del Vigía on the hill above, and the Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Center on the edge of town.
Bomba and plena came from here. So did the Ponce Carnival, running since 1858 and the oldest on the island, every February. And in 1937 the Ponce Massacre happened in these streets — an event often described as the birthplace of Puerto Rican national identity. In 1992 Ponce became the first municipality on the island to win autonomy.
When your pueblo is somewhere you left
More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
