About Rincón
Rincón sits on the western tip of the island, founded in 1771 by Don Luis de Añasco. It is small — 15,187 people at the 2020 census — and it carries two nicknames that between them explain the whole place: El Pueblo de los Bellos Atardeceres, the town of beautiful sunsets, and Pueblo del Surfing.
The surfing name is earned. The 1968 World Surfing Championship was held at Domes and María's, and it put a town of a few thousand people on the map of every surfer on earth. Winter swells on this coast can run 25 to 30 feet. People still call it the Caribbean's Hawaii.
The rest of it is quieter. The Punta Higuero lighthouse above the water. Humpback whales passing through in January and February. Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. The Fiestas Patronales de Santa Rosa de Lima every September, with the parades and the food and the whole town in the plaza.
Its barrios: Atalaya, Barrero, Calvache, Cruces, Ensenada, Jagüey, Puntas and Río Grande, with the barrio-pueblo at the centre.

More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
