About San Germán
Second only to San Juan in age. The original settlement was established around 1511–12 at Guayanilla and moved to this site in the 1570s. 31,879 people at the 2020 census.
Porta Coeli, the chapel on the hill, is among the earliest surviving Spanish churches in the Americas. The whole centre is a designated historic district. The town is La Ciudad de las Lomas, city of hills, and Ciudad Fundadora de Pueblos — founder of towns — because so much of the west was settled out of here.
Lola Rodríguez de Tió wrote the original lyrics of La Borinqueña, and she was born in San Germán. So was Benicio del Toro.
And it is Ciudad Cuna del Baloncesto Puertorriqueño: the San Germán Athletics took fourteen basketball championships between 1932 and 1997.
