About San Sebastián
Founded on 20 September 1752 by Cristóbal González de la Cruz, and home to 39,345 people at the 2020 census. It was called Las Vegas del Pepino before it was called anything else, for the cattle farms and the cucumbers, and the nickname outlived the reason: everyone still says Pepino.
The other name it carries is Cuna de la Hamaca — cradle of the hammock. Coffee, fruit and dairy on the hillsides. Gozalandia and its waterfalls. Lake Guajataca on the edge of town. The Church of Saint Sebastian the Martyr on the National Register.
And then there is the thing Pepino is quietly proudest of. After Hurricane María, when the grid was gone and the wait had no end in sight, a volunteer crew of local electricians who called themselves the Pepino Power Authority went out and put the lines back up themselves. They restored power to thousands of homes. Nobody sent them.
The municipality runs to 71.73 square miles across two dozen barrios, bordering Isabela, Quebradillas, Camuy, Las Marías, Moca, Añasco and Lares.

More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
