About Yabucoa
Yabucoa was founded on 3 October 1793, on land donated by Don Manuel Colón de Bonilla and Doña Catalina Morales Pacheco. Thirty thousand four hundred and twenty-six people lived there at the 2020 census.
It has three nicknames and each one is a small argument about what the town is. Ciudad del Azúcar, sugar city, for the cane that filled the valley and the Roig refinery that processed it. El Pueblo de Yuca. And Los Bebe Leche, the milk drinkers — the one people from Yabucoa will explain to you whether you ask or not.
The valley still shows it. Hacienda Santa Lucía in ruins, the Roig refinery, plantains and bananas where the cane used to be. On the coast: Playa Guayanés, Playa Lucia, and Punta Yeguas with the Inés María Mendoza nature reserve on the headland.
Yabucoa also holds a date nobody there needed to memorise. Hurricane María made landfall in Camino Nuevo on 20 September 2017. Eight months later more than a third of the town still had no power.
Its barrios: Aguacate, Calabazas, Camino Nuevo, Guayabota, Jácanas, Juan Martín, Limones, Playa and Tejas, with the barrio-pueblo at the centre.

More Puerto Ricans live off the island than on it. For a lot of people the pueblo is not where they live — it is where their mother is from, or where they spent every summer, or the name on a street sign they have not seen in twenty years.
