About Aguada
Aguada claims that Columbus made his first Puerto Rico landing here on 19 November 1493 — a claim Añasco, a few miles south, disputes to this day. The argument is old enough to be part of the furniture, and it gave the town one of its names: Ciudad del Descubrimiento, city of the discovery.
It answers to others too. La Villa de Sotomayor, for Cristóbal de Sotomayor, who took control of the area in 1510. El Pueblo Playero, the beach town. La Ciudad del Vaticano. 38,136 people at the 2020 census.
Sugar built the modern town. Central Coloso, one of the island's most important refineries, ran here until it closed in 2003, and the 1928 Puente de Coloso still stands. So does the church of San Francisco de Asís, whose festival fills the plaza every October.
