About Aibonito
Founded on 13 March 1824 by Manuel Velázquez, up in the Sierra de Cayey. Its main square sits at 732 metres — 2,401 feet — the highest plaza in Puerto Rico. 24,637 people at the 2020 census.
On 9 March 1911 the thermometer here read 40°F, still the coldest temperature ever recorded on the island. Hence La Nevera de Puerto Rico, the refrigerator, and La Ciudad Fría.
The cold is why the flowers grow. Aibonito is La Ciudad de las Flores and its Festival of Flowers has run since 1969, filling the town every year from late June into early July. The San José church dates to 1898.
That same year, at Asomante just outside town, around 800 Spanish and Puerto Rican soldiers held off advancing American troops — one of the last stands of the Spanish-American War on the island.
