About Añasco
In 1511, in the Añasco river, a group of Taínos held the Spaniard Diego Salcedo under the water to find out whether the Spanish could drown. They could. The news travelled, the rebellion followed, and Añasco has been La Ciudad Donde los Dioses Murieron ever since — the city where the gods died.
The town proper was founded on 18 October 1733 and named for Don Luis de Añasco, a colonist from Extremadura who had arrived two centuries earlier with Ponce de León. 25,596 people at the 2020 census.
Its other names are about food and pride: El Pueblo del Hojaldre, for the pastry, El Pueblo de los Morcilleros, for the blood sausage, and La Cuna de la Puertorriqueñidad, the cradle of Puerto Ricanness. Historians also argue that Columbus first came ashore at Bahía de Añasco rather than at Aguada up the coast — an argument neither town intends to lose.
