About Arroyo
Founded on Christmas Day 1855 by Ignacio de Orbeta. 15,843 people at the 2020 census. It grew as a sugar port around Central Lafayette and now runs on pharmaceuticals and manufacturing.
In 1858 Samuel Morse installed the first telegraph line in Latin America here, at his son-in-law's hacienda. The inaugural transmission went out on 1 March 1859. There is a monument to him in town, which is a strange and good thing for a small Caribbean port to have.
The nicknames are Pueblo Grato, the grateful town, and Los Bucaneros — buccaneers, for the pirates who once worked this stretch of coast. The Punta de las Figuras lighthouse still marks it. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora del Carmen run in July, and the Festival del Pescao in November.
