About Barceloneta

Founded on 1 July 1881 by Bonocio Llenza Feliú, an immigrant from Barcelona who named it after home. 22,657 people at the 2020 census.

Pineapples made it — hence La Ciudad de las Piñas — but what it became is stranger. Barceloneta now holds one of the largest pharmaceutical complexes in the world, fourteen plants on the north coast, and for years produced all the Viagra sold in North America. La Ciudad Industrial is not an exaggeration.

It is also El Pueblo de Sixto Escobar, for the boxer born here who became Puerto Rico's first world champion. The Sixto Escobar Museum keeps his name in town. Beyond it are the Caño Tiburones wetlands and the black sand at Machuca beach. Fiestas Patronales de la Virgen del Carmen run in mid-July.
