About Barranquitas

Founded on 3 June 1803 by Antonio Aponte Ramos, high in the Cordillera Central. 28,983 people at the 2020 census.

It is La Cuna de Próceres — cradle of eminent figures — and El Altar de la Patria, because Luis Muñoz Rivera is buried here, and so is his son Luis Muñoz Marín, the island's first elected governor. Father and son, one hillside town.

The San Cristóbal Canyon cuts through the municipality and is among the deepest in the West Indies. The National Crafts Fair has run every July for over fifty years and is the reason a lot of people make the winding drive up. The land grows apio, plantains and coffee; the factories make shoes and clothing.

After Hurricane María the town went roughly forty days before the power came back.
