About Camuy
Founded on 12 June 1807 on the northwestern coast, in the karst belt. 32,827 people at the 2020 census.
The Río Camuy cave system is described as the third largest and longest underground river system in the world. The caverns park above it is the town's defining place — it stayed closed for four years after Hurricane María, which tells you what the storm did up here.
Hence Valle de las Cavernas. Camuy is also Ciudad Romántica, Ciudad de los Areneros and Ciudad del Sol Taíno. The Ernesto Memorial Chapel, a limestone Methodist church, sits in town; Peñón Brusi beach sits below it. The patron festivities for Saint Joseph run in March.
The town celebrated its bicentennial in 2007 and in 2015 the U.S. Conference of Mayors named it one of the most livable cities.
