About Canóvanas
Separated from Loíza by a law passed in 1969 and approved in 1970, Canóvanas sits on the northeastern coastal plain near San Juan. 42,337 people at the 2020 census.
In the 1990s reports of livestock killings made the chupacabras a national story, and a former mayor leaned all the way in — promoting the town on the legend. El Pueblo del Chupacabras stuck.
The older names are more serious. Pueblo Valeroso, the valiant town, comes from the cacica Yuira. Ciudad de los Indios. And La Ciudad de las Carreras, because the Hipódromo Camarero, the island's racetrack, is here.
The Jesús T. Piñero house, built around 1931, is now a museum to the first Puerto Rican-born governor. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora del Pilar run in October.
