About Ciales
Founded 24 June 1820 by Isidro Rodríguez, on land that until then belonged to Manatí. 16,984 people at the 2020 census.
It sits at the island's geographic centre, which is why people call it the heart of Puerto Rico, and at the mouth of the mountains, which is why it is Puerta de la Cordillera Central. Coffee is the crop — there is a Museo del Café in town — alongside dairy and fruit. It is also Ciudad de la cojoba and Cuna de poetas.
That last one is earned. Juan Antonio Corretjer, considered the national poet of Puerto Rico, was born in Ciales. So was Juan "Pachín" Vicéns, named the best basketball player in the world in 1959.
Toro Negro Forest Reserve lies above the town, and Las Archillas cave holds Taíno petroglyphs.
