About Coamo
Founded 15 July 1579 by Don Pedro de Aponte, which makes it the third post-Columbian settlement in Puerto Rico. 34,668 people at the 2020 census. Hence La Villa Añeja, the old town.
Los Baños de Coamo are the reason most people know it — natural thermal springs in the hills, running long before anyone built a hotel around them. Ciudad de las Aguas Termales.
The other reason is the running. The San Blas Half Marathon has been run here every February since 1963, and it is why the town answers to Los Maratonistas. The Iglesia San Blas de Illescas, begun in 1661, is among the oldest parishes on the island and gives the race and the festival their name.
The Battle of Coamo was fought here in 1898. Governor Alejandro García Padilla and the ballplayer Víctor Caratini both come from the town.
