About Corozal
Founded in 1795 and officially a town from 1804, in the central mountains. 34,571 people at the 2020 census. The name comes from the palma de corozo, the grugru palm.
It is Los Plataneros — the plantain growers — with a National Plantain Festival and a Ruta del Plátano to prove it.
And it is La Capital del Voleibol, which is not a boast. The Plataneros de Corozal have won nine men's national championships. Pinkin de Corozal have won eighteen women's titles, a record, the most recent in 2022. For a mountain town of thirty-odd thousand that is an absurd haul.
The Mavilla Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. Fiestas Patronales de la Sagrada Familia run in January. Between 1902 and 1905 the municipality was folded into Toa Alta before getting itself back.
