Named for a single sour orange tree that travellers used as a landmark.
About Naranjito
Founded 3 December 1824 by Braulio Morales, in the central mountains south of Toa Alta. 29,241 people at the 2020 census. The name comes from a little orange tree that stood by the road and told people where they were.
It is La Ciudad de los Colores and El Pueblo de los Changos, after the grackles — and after the Naranjito Changos, one of the most successful volleyball franchises in Puerto Rico.
Coffee and tobacco were the crops; now it is tropical fruit and poultry, plus the Ruta del Chicharrón, a corridor of roadside stands that people drive up from the metro area for on a Sunday.
The Puente Atirantado Jesús Izcoa Moure, a cable-stayed bridge, crosses the valley. La Plata Lake sits below. A week of Fast & Furious 5 was filmed here in 2011.
