About Culebra
Founded 27 October 1880 by Don Cayetano Escudero, on an island seventeen miles off the east coast. 1,792 people at the 2020 census — the least populous municipality in Puerto Rico.
Flamenco Beach is the draw, and the two M4 Sherman tanks still sitting on its sand are the reason the island matters beyond tourism. The U.S. Navy used Culebra as a bombing range; between 1971 and 1975 the people who lived there protested until the Navy left. The tanks were targets. Nobody has moved them.
La Isla Chiquita. Última Virgen, the last of the Virgin Islands. Cuna del Sol Borincano. The Culebrita lighthouse was finished in 1886. Ensenada Honda is the harbour. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora del Carmen run in July.
