About Vieques
An island municipality eight miles off the east coast. The settlement was founded in 1832 by Teófilo José Jaime María Le Guillou; it became a municipality in 1875. 8,249 people at the 2020 census. The name comes from a Taíno word meaning small island.
From 1941 to 2003 the U.S. Navy used Vieques as a bombing range. In 1999 a civilian guard, David Sanes, was killed by an errant bomb. The protests that followed did not stop, and in 2003 the Navy left. It is one of the clearest victories civil disobedience has ever won in the Caribbean.
Mosquito Bay was named by Guinness in 2006 as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The Faro Punta Mulas lighthouse dates from 1896; the Fortín Conde de Mirasol is now a museum. Paso fino horses roam the island loose.
