About Fajardo
Founded 26 October 1772 by Santiago de Mexía, on the northeastern corner. 32,124 people at the 2020 census. La Metrópolis del Sol Naciente, because the sun reaches here first. Also Los Cariduros, the tough ones.
Puerto del Rey is the largest marina in the Caribbean, and Fajardo is where you catch the ferry to Vieques and Culebra. Laguna Grande is one of the island's bioluminescent bays. Seven Seas carries a Blue Flag.
The history is combative. In November 1824 the American naval officer David Porter landed here with about two hundred men — the Foxardo Affair — and was court-martialled for it. On 1 August 1898 U.S. troops came ashore again, this time for the Spanish-American War.
The boxer Félix "Tito" Trinidad is from Fajardo, and so is Antonia Coello Novello, the first woman and first Hispanic U.S. Surgeon General.
