About Florida
Florida became a municipality in the 1970s — the last one created in Puerto Rico. It started in 1881 as a barrio of Barceloneta and took almost a century to get its own name. 11,692 people at the 2020 census, on about ten square miles.
It sits in the northern karst, which gives it Tierra de los Mogotes, land of the limestone haystack hills, and the Río Encantado running underground beneath them — hence La Tierra del Río Encantado. The caves Román, Miró, Juana Gómez and Balcón are all here.
Pineapple was the crop, and the Cayenalisa Pineapple Festival still runs every July. Pharmaceutical plants are the modern employer. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes run in September.
The MLB manager Charlie Montoyo is from Florida.
