About Guánica
Juan Ponce de León landed in Guánica's harbour on 12 August 1508 and founded Guaynía there — the first capital of Puerto Rico, destroyed in the uprising of 1511. On 25 July 1898 American troops landed on the same water to begin the Puerto Rico campaign of the Spanish-American War. The Guánica Rock monument marks the second one.
It became a separate municipality on 13 March 1914. 13,787 people at the 2020 census. Pueblo de la Amistad, town of friendship, and El Pueblo de las Doce Calles, for its twelve streets.
The land is dry — under thirty inches of rain a year — and the Bosque Seco de Guánica has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1981, the best-preserved tropical dry forest in the Caribbean. Sugar ran through Central Guánica. Cayo Aurora, everyone calls Gilligan's Island.
The 5.8 and 6.4 earthquakes of 6–7 January 2020 hit Guánica harder than anywhere.
