About Guayama
Founded 29 January 1736 by the Spanish governor Matías de Abadía as San Antonio de Padua de Guayama. 36,614 people at the 2020 census.
It is El Pueblo de los Brujos, the town of the witches, which Guayameses have long since decided to enjoy. Also La Ciudad del Guamaní, after the river.
On 11 April 1832 fire took the town — 57 houses and 9 huts — and it was rebuilt on a grid under the Laws of the Indies, which is why the centre reads the way it does. Sugar followed: fourteen plantations by the late 1800s, the Molino de Vives still standing. Pharmaceuticals and a coal plant came after.
Two names carry it further than the cane ever did. The poet Luis Palés Matos was born here. So was Tite Curet Alonso, who wrote over two thousand salsa songs — a catalogue most countries would take for a national archive.
