About Guayanilla
Founded 27 February 1833 by José de la Cueva y los Santos. 17,784 people at the 2020 census, on the south coast at Guayanilla Bay with mountains behind rising to around 3,300 feet.
It is Tierra de Agüeybaná and Capital Taína. The Nazario Collection of inscribed stones, tied to the cacique Agüeybaná II, is the town's cultural signature.
Industry here is heavy — petrochemicals and thermoelectric power, producing over half the island's electricity.
Punta Ventana was the landmark: a natural stone window over the sea, on every postcard of this coast. It collapsed in the 2019 earthquakes. The quakes of 6–7 January 2020 then destroyed the Catholic church in Guayanilla Pueblo. The town is still rebuilding.
