About Yauco
Founded in 1756 by Fernando Pacheco, in the southwest, mountainous but reaching the Caribbean, bisected by the Río Yauco. 34,172 people at the 2020 census.
It is El Pueblo del Café, and Yauco coffee is the island's signature. Corsican immigrants remade the town in the nineteenth century — by the 1860s they owned seven of every ten coffee plantations here, and the Mariani family adapted a cotton gin to husk coffee. Hence Los Corsos.
It is also Capital Taína: the Taíno regarded this area as the capital of Borikén under the cacique Agüeybaná.
Two dates matter. On 26 March 1897, during the Intentona de Yauco, the Puerto Rican flag was raised on island soil for the first time. On 26 July 1898 the Battle of Yauco became the first major land battle of the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico. The independence leader Antonio Mattei Lluberas was from here.
