About Hatillo
Founded 30 June 1823 by Agustín Ruiz Miranda, a Canarian immigrant, on the north coast. 38,481 people at the 2020 census.
It is Capital de la Industria Lechera — the dairy capital — and supplies roughly a third of all milk consumed in Puerto Rico. Also Los Ganaderos, the ranchers, and Tierra de Campos Verdes.
The Festival de las Máscaras, every 28 December, came over with those same Canary Islanders in 1823 and has run ever since. It is one of the oldest continuous traditions on the island and the reason people drive up from San Juan in late December.
Hurricane María hit 75 dairy farms here in 2017, with island milk production projected to drop by as much as 45% that year.
