About Humacao
Founded 5 April 1722, settled by Canary Islanders arriving around 1721. 50,896 people at the 2020 census. It takes its name from the Taíno cacique Jumacao, said to be the first cacique to learn to read and write Spanish — he is reported to have written to the King of Spain.
It is La Perla del Oriente, the pearl of the east, and La Ciudad Gris, the grey city.
Palmas del Mar, over three thousand acres, is the largest resort in Puerto Rico. The Festival de la Pana — breadfruit — runs the first weekend of September, and Humacao Grita brings urban art in November. Fiestas Patronales Inmaculada Concepción run in December.
The actress Rita Moreno was born here. On 20 September 2017 Hurricane María pushed a six-foot storm surge into the town.
