About Jayuya
Founded 9 March 1911, high in the Cordillera Central, named for the Taíno leader Hayuya. 14,779 people at the 2020 census. It is La Capital Indígena, and the claim is taken seriously here — the El Cemí Museum is built in the shape of one.
Cerro de Punta, at 4,389 feet the highest point in Puerto Rico, stands in the municipality. Coffee grows on the slopes and the town's wood carvers are known across the island.
In October 1950 the Jayuya Uprising broke out here, led by Blanca Canales. The nationalists held the town for three days before U.S. forces bombed it from the air. It is one of the few places in the modern Americas to have been bombed by its own government.
After Hurricane María the roads were so badly cut that medical evacuations had to go by helicopter.
