About Utuado
Founded 12 October 1739 by Sebastián de Morfi, an Irish settler acting for sixty families from Arecibo. It was the first town established in the interior mountains and is the eleventh-oldest municipality on the island. 28,287 people at the 2020 census, across the third-largest land area in Puerto Rico.
The Caguana Ceremonial Ball Courts are here — the most extensive surviving example of Taíno engineering in the West Indies, and a National Historic Landmark.
Utuado was also the first city in Puerto Rico with public electric lighting, in the late 1890s, and the first municipality to elect its officials after the Spanish-American War. On 30 October 1950 the Utuado uprising was put down here.
Coffee is the crop — third-largest producer on the island. Dos Bocas and Caonillas lakes sit below the ridges. Hurricane María brought more than twenty-five landslides per square mile.
