About Juana Díaz
Founded 25 April 1798 by Don Diego Vázquez, on a site settled since 1582. 46,538 people at the 2020 census.
The Three Kings Festival on 6 January is the largest in Puerto Rico and the reason the town is El Belén de Puerto Rico. The Festival del Mabí follows in March — maví being the fermented Taíno drink that gives the town its other name, La Ciudad del Maví. It is also La Ciudad del Jacaguas, after the river.
Sugar dominated once; now it is plantains, bananas and mangoes, local rums, and a beige marble quarried here that is reckoned among the finest anywhere.
In August 1898 the war correspondent Stephen Crane took possession of the town single-handed, before the American regiment arrived. The poet Luis Lloréns Torres was born here.
