About Juncos
Founded 2 August 1797 by Tomás Pizarro, on land settled five years earlier. 37,012 people at the 2020 census. The name means reeds, and they are on the flag and the coat of arms.
It is La Ciudad del Valenciano, after the river that runs through it, and Los Mulos del Valenciano.
Coffee, sugar, fruit and tobacco worked this land. What is there now is biotechnology — Amgen's largest facility anywhere, with roughly three thousand employees, sits in Juncos. Not many towns of this size have that.
Roberto Clemente played baseball for Juncos before the majors. The Teatro Junqueño is the town's stage; the Modesto Carrión marathon runs in November and the Plenazo Junqueño in February. Irma and María together did an estimated $25 million of damage in 2017.
