About Lajas
Founded 3 April 1883 by Teodoro Jácome Pagán y Cancel and José Rodríguez y Rodríguez, on the southwest coast. 23,334 people at the 2020 census.
La Parguera's Bahía Fosforescente is the draw — one of the island's bioluminescent bays, where the water lights up when you move through it. The Laguna Cartagena refuge sits inland.
Lajas is La Ciudad Cardenalicia, cardinal city, because Luis Aponte Martínez — the first and so far only Puerto Rican cardinal — was born here. It is also Los Tira Piedras. The town was settled in part by Xuetas, Catalan Jews from Mallorca.
And it maintains the Puerto Rico Alien Route, complete with a landing strip for extraterrestrial contact, which the town treats with exactly the right mix of seriousness and humour. Pineapple was the crop until Hurricane María destroyed the industry in 2017.
