About Lares
A mountain town in the west, named for Amador de Lariz, a Spanish nobleman and settler. 28,105 people at the 2020 census.
On 23 September 1868 the Grito de Lares broke out — the revolt that declared a Puerto Rican republic in this plaza. It lasted barely a day. It has lasted ever since as the central symbol of the independence movement, and it is why Lares is Ciudad del Grito and Altar de la Patria.
It is also La Capital de la Montaña. Bananas, coffee, oranges and tomatoes come off these hills. Hacienda Lealtad still stands.
And there is the ice cream. The Heladería de Lares is known across the island for flavours no one else would attempt — rice and beans, garlic, corn. People drive an hour and a half from San Juan for it. The singer José Feliciano was born in Lares.
