About Las Marías
Founded 1 July 1871 by Don Benito Recio y Moreno, in the western mountains between Maricao and Añasco. 8,874 people at the 2020 census across 46.51 square miles.
It is Pueblo de la China Dulce — the sweet orange — and Ciudad de los Cítricos. The Festival de las Chinas runs every March and is the event of the year; in 2019 El Gran Combo played it.
La Casona de Artemio and Hacienda Palma Escrita are the historic houses. Fiestas Patronales Inmaculada Concepción run in December.
The terrain is the story here: in Hurricane María parts of the municipality saw more than twenty-five landslides per square mile.
