About Maricao
Founded 10 April 1874 by Bernardo Collado, Julián Ayala, Francisco M. Sojo, Napoleón Pietri and Leoncio S. Martinez. 4,755 people at the 2020 census — the second least populous municipality in Puerto Rico.
It is Tierra del Café, and it was a centre of the nineteenth-century coffee boom. The Festival del Acabe de Café — the end of the harvest — runs every February and is the biggest thing that happens here.
Also Ciudad del Monte del Estado, for the state forest and its observation tower, and Ciudad de Leyenda y Romance. Hacienda Delicias is the museum.
There is no direct highway; it is roughly three hours from San Juan. Maricao has had the highest rate of child poverty in Puerto Rico for two decades, and in Hurricane María it saw more than twenty-five landslides per square mile. It is a hard, beautiful place, and the people from it know both halves of that.
