About Luquillo
Founded 26 October 1797 on the northeast coast, between the ocean and the rainforest. 17,781 people at the 2020 census, with fourteen beaches along twelve miles of coast.
The name probably comes from Yukiyú, the Taíno name for El Yunque, likely meaning white mountain. There is a monument in town to the cacique Loquillo.
La Monserrate — Luquillo Beach — is the one everybody knows, and the kiosks along it are an institution in their own right. It is Capital del Sol and La Riviera de Puerto Rico, and also Los Come Cocos.
Leatherback turtles nest on these beaches; there is a festival for them in April and a Coconut Festival in September. Fiestas Patronales de San José run in March. Hurricane María damaged or destroyed 1,100 homes.
